Umbwe Route 6 Days/7 Nights
Safari & Expedition Overview
The Umbwe Route is the least used and least crowded path on Mount Kilimanjaro, offering a true wilderness experience. For good reason, it is also considered the most difficult and steepest route, demanding strong physical endurance and determination.
Climbers on this route ascend rapidly through dense rainforests and steep ridge lines directly beneath the southern ice fields, rewarding seasoned adventurers with unparalleled solitude and breathtaking alpine panoramas.
Detailed Itinerary Program
Drive from Moshi/Arusha to Umbwe Gate (1,800m). Begin your trek through the dense, pristine rainforest along a steep and narrow ridge path to Umbwe Cave Camp (2,850m).
Leave the forest behind as the trail steepens along a rocky ridge into the moorland zone. Traverse through heather and open moorland with stunning views of Kibo before arriving at Barranco Camp (3,985m).
Begin with the exciting scramble up the famous Barranco Wall, then trek through ridges and valleys beneath the Southern Ice Field to reach Karanga Camp (4,035m) for lunch and vital acclimatization.
Ascend steadily through the alpine desert landscape toward Barafu Base Camp (4,673m). Rest early, hydrate, and prepare your gear for the midnight summit push.
Start your summit attempt around midnight through heavy scree to Stella Point (5,756m), continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Witness the glorious sunrise over glaciers before descending back to Barafu for lunch and continuing down to Mweka Camp (3,100m).
Enjoy a final celebratory breakfast on the mountain, followed by a scenic descent through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. Receive your official summit certificates and transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
